A royalist French aristocrat offers his castle in the hinterland of Bordeaux as a foothold to the British.

Sharpe, freshly married to Jane Gibbons, is commanded to reconnoitre the Situation. Jane falls ill and Sharpe leaves his bride only very reluctantly. In the castle, he and his men realise, that they walked into a trap. French troups arrive and start a siege...
