The South Essex Regiment is stationed at the French border, when Sharpe hears desastrous news: Cut down in numbers due to the enduring fights the "South Essex" shall be disbanded. There is only one thing left to save the Regiment: the "Second" Bataillon from England. But that is said to not exist anymore. Sharpe travels with Harper to England, and comes on the traces of a large scale fraud in which also Simmerson is involved. He meets Simmersons niece Jane Gibbons and falls in love with her...
