1809 - this year sees some Battles with Wellesley at the head of the British Troups, he finally triumphs over the French at Talavera. Nevertheless, Wellesley has to acknowledge the supremacy of the French forces and retreats to Portugal. Here, he starts building the Lines of Torres Vedras, to protect Portugal from an invasion of the French.

In opposition to his father, Bavarias crown prince Ludwig detests the French. Ludwig fears, that Napoleon wants to force him into a marriage. Therefore, he decides to choose for himself and marries on the 12th Octobre the Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The event is celebrated with a horse race on a meadow (= "Wiese") which is named then "Theresienwiese". To commemorate the event, from then on there is a feast every year, called nowadays "Oktoberfest"! Napoleon marries Marie-Louise von Habsburg. |

1811 - Wellington prepares the Invasion of Spain and besieges the border-towns Almeida and Badajoz The French Général Massena, who wants to relieve Almeida, is stopped by Wellington at Fuentes d'Onoro. Maréchal Soult marches in the direction of Badajoz and is defeated by the English at Albuera.

1812 - Wellington assaults the Spanish border-fortresses Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz and enters Spain. He defeats the French led by Marmont at Salamanca and occupies Madrid. But than Wellington has to retreat again to Portugal.

We meet again the Riflemen and Captain Sharpe in front of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. From Britain, newly named officers arrive, who take over the command of the South Essex Regiment. For Sharpe, that means for the time being, that he loses his position and rank. He becomes Quartermaster. His only chance: The Fortress Badajoz shall be stormed. At the breach, the Forlorn Hope will be the first. The officer who leads this command, will be promoted for sure - if he survives the murderous mission. When he learns, that his beloved Teresa together with their little daughter is imprisoned in Badajoz, nobody can stop him. He isn't allowed to lead the Forlorn Hope, but when the soldiers can't take the breach, and their officer falls, Sharpe, together with the Chosen Men takes over the life endangering mission. And, against all odds, they suceed in storming the breach. Badajoz is conquered by the Britons. Sharpe, who's old enemy Sergeant Hakeswill searches also for Teresa, finds her just in time...
